Giclee Prints

Giclee (pronounced “zhee-clay”) is a digital method of fine art printing that was originally developed in 1989. The word Giclee is French for “spray of ink”. The image that is to be printed is scanned and digitally stored in a computer, then sent to a high resolution inkjet printer.

Giclee is recognized as a category of fine are print such as lithographs or serigraphs. Giclee is considered to be the premier method of reproducing original art. Color is much richer and truer to the original than in other types of reproduction – it features a continuous tone color instead of a screen pattern of dots. Unlike other printing methods, each image is sent to the printer individually. Because of this, Giclees are often offered in smaller editions that lithographs.

Although the inks and papers used are archival and offer a high degree of permanence, Giclees should be treated as fine art and be protected from moisture and harsh sunlight.

Print Editions

A “Limited Edition” means that the number of prints produced has a limited size. “1/150” means that this is the first print out of an edition of 150. A percentage of associated Artist Proofs are also produced, indicated by “A/P (1/15)” – meaning the first out of 15 artist proofs. Each print is hand signed, titled and numbered. When the edition is sold out, there will be no more available except on the secondary market.

Artist’s Proofs

With every edition printed, a small number of identical prints are set aside to be signed and numbered as artist’s proofs. These are usually made available only after the numbered edition has sold out, and prices are generally 3 to 4 times higher than the original issue price of the print.
